Online workplace mediation

The opportunity to discuss business and workplace issues in person have several advantages. It supports the understanding if we see the gestures and body language of our business partner or colleague as well as it strengthens the trust if we can look into each others’ eyes. However, during the pandemic we also experienced that videoconferences may be also efficient and if some communicational and behavioral rules are adhered to, the potential disadvantages thereof may be minimized. This is right in case of mediation as well. Although, mediators were reluctant regarding online mediation earlier, during the pandemic it was justified that it works and should be maintained even in the post covid times.

How does online mediation work?

To online mediation the same rules shall apply as to personal mediation with the only difference that online mediation is conducted in the online space (via Zoom).

In which cases it is recommended to use online mediation?

The clients may choose whether they want personal or online mediation.

The advantages of online mediation are the followings:

  • clients can save the travel time and – costs,
  • no problem if one of the parties or both is abroad,
  • the online space may support stress release if the tension is high between the parties.

What is needed to online mediation?

Beyond a basic IT infrastructure and a quiet room nothing is necessary to participate in online mediation.

Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.
